Failed WordPress Update – Round 1

I recently attempted to update my WordPress installation.  The goal was to update the website to the latest WordPress, 4.3.1 from 4.2.4.  After clicking update, in less than a split-second, the site returned ERROR 500 and that’s it.  The logs are sporadically placed so I had trouble finding them.  I don’t know if CentOS likes dropping logs closer to the codebase’s location rather than in /var/log or if I inadvertently did that somehow but whatever the reason, I’m reconfiguring my server to drop its logs into /var/log.

When I try to start it by hand, all I get is a FAILED after two warnings.  That’s it:

Looking up the httpd.conf manual and reading more about the IfModule sections, it seems like a legit configuration so I’m going to leave it.  Something else is causing my web server to fail to start.  I have yet to find a cause for the “FAILED” start and had to roll back my public website to an earlier snapshot…which HostGator accomplished for me without any issues.  Thanks, HostGator!  Whew!  That saved my week.

Now it’s time to reconfigure my logging so I can track this down when it happens again.

      1. I’ve seen this and it’s everywhere.  The subways of NYC, the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia as well as trolleys and sidewalks of New Orleans.  Legit.
    3. The found ring (Paris)
      1. I’ve only seen this on YouTube and can’t tell if it was staged or not.  No personal experience with this one.
    4. The thrown baby (Rome)
      1. No thanks.
    5. Street games (Paris, London)
      1. When I was in København, I got duped out of 50kr and lost my opera tickets “fell” out of my pockets.  I felt like an idiot but later realized that nobody wins at these games.  I never noticed his accomplices but I imagine if I waited around long enough, I would have seen them.

      1. Whatever, dude.  I know where my wallet is.

I go to hip-hop shows and there are plenty of times when I get a CD (and cassettes back in the day) handed to me then am asked for payment.  I shove it back at them.  It’s a turn-off.  I have, however, talked to artists who were passively marketing their wares and ended up spending $$ with them.  I like to support artists, not scam artists.

Crabtree Falls

This picture was just prior to peak fall colors.  What a beautiful hike!  It’s also one of the most crowded hikes I’ve had to deal with in central-ish Virginia.  Tons of people.  You’ll quickly notice there are only two bathrooms for hundreds of people, too.  I appreciate the park service for even providing any but today’s population can’t seem to clean up after themselves so they get pretty disgusting after a while.  At least the men’s bathroom does.

Successful Weekend

This weekend I promised myself I’d work on my house, more specifically, my yard.  I haven’t been around much the past few weekends and before that I was buried with computer work.  Luckily I was able to make time to visit Crabtree Falls three weekends in a row!  The first was with my love, Beth Anne.  The next was with my friend and ex-colleague, Jat.  The weekend after that, it was with my dear, retired friend, the English Lady.

So, I’ve been neglecting my chores, to say the least.

Yesterday, I replaced a deck board, raked leaves (filled two of the largest bags I can get my hands on), organized some lumber, laid a few patio stones, fixed my bed, did some laundry, picked up a piece I had framed, the Charlottesville Music Showcase flyer, and had a great dinner at The Shebeen.

Today, I finished raking, bought and spread some mulch, cleaned house, gave some cedar to Lollipop for a window bench I’ll be building for her, and trimmed the Mulberry tree stump of its extra growth.

This is also my first post so on top of everything else I have accomplished, I’m going to start organizing my photos so I can share them.  That’s the purpose of this boring post…to whet the whistle for me to begin to play with my website and post some pictures.  There, I said it.
